“No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.” (Matthew 9:16-17 KJV)
This was Christ’s answer to a question that was asked towards Him, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?” (Matthew 9:14) The question was really about why don’t you do things the old way. Christ’s answer showed that this is a new way of life and you cannot mix the old and the new. If you try to understand and comprehend what Christ is teaching by using the old ways, by the teachings of the old (whether to fast or not, whether to eat or not eat, whether to wash hands or not, etc.) – you will ruin yourselves. You cannot patch what you used to do with the new! Patch-work of the old with the new creates an even bigger problem, because it will end up in complete shipwreck and destruction! It’s important to completely get rid of the old and only learn the new!
