“And said, Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven” (Matthew 18:3).

Why did the Lord say that we should have faith like a child? Why does he compare faith to the faith of a child? Why is it necessary to believe in this way?

Svetlana - You can teach children
I am reasoning: how do children differ from adults? When they are born, they do not know anything, parents teach them. How do the parents teach their children? They give them knowledge, in other words, they speak the word. And the children live by this word. Children trust their parents. Then, when they get older, they hear or read another word (different teachings, different understandings), begin to doubt and search. A child makes a choice and becomes an adult.

I conclude, that the different between a child and an adult is in the baggage of knowledge. When a child grows up, he can understand a lot on his own, from this, he begins to rely on himself, and not on the parents.

God has placed for us: if you want to become heavenly and live eternally, it is necessary to die for this world, for all the teachings of this world (knowledge), which you lived by, because we believed in them (we were sinners, because we believed in many things, but not in God). And to believe in the one and only Truth from God, the teaching of Jesus Christ, be born from God – to accept the Word of Truth and live by Him, by Christ, completely trust Him, and become His child.

God loved us when we were yet sinners, and He gave us His Own Son (John 3:16). We need to be humble and become as little children, listen and do the will of our Heavenly Father. That is the only way to inherit the Eternal Kingdom.

Maria - Children are in need of guidance, they simply believe
The Lord is calling to believe, as children believe, because children are very trusting and believe everything. They are always in need of guidance, because they are feeble/weak, and cannot do anything on their own. They do not have any experiences of life, that is why they have no need to check/verify, they simply believe what is said.

I simply believe, that God Himself “Of His own will begat He us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:18). “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12-13). If God begat, then He is the Father, and the one born from Him – is His child.

Why is it necessary to believe in this way? “But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).

I believe every Word of God, because it is truth, it does not change, has power, and is the living word. By faith a person has forgiveness, justification, salvation, sanctification, healing, holiness, joy, love, eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven. He gave me the opportunity to be His child.

Nadezda - Sincerity, simplicity, and obedience
Be like children – be obedient, trust, in other words, it all lies in obedience. In hearing the word of truth, you need to believe and turn to God, as a child, believe that this is the truth, entirely accept this word. Speaking for myself, when I heard that all my sins are forgiven and that nothing is imputed unto me, that Christ died for me and resurrected, and I with Him, I experienced and experience that there is nothing greater or more blissful than being called a child of God: “I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His names sake” (1 John 2:12).

Prior to this, I carried a burden upon myself, guilt, the past would always follow me, and here suddenly – everything is forgiven and Eternal Life is given, simply as a gift! I indeed rejoiced as a child then, not wavering in any way. His words are truth and today I rejoice in the same way, because I completely trust my Heavenly Father.

You need to be simple, sincere, and open, in order to inherit God’s promises. The growth needs to be natural, and the child-like faith is necessary for this and proper nourishment.

Zhenya - Children are always in need of their parents
I would like to add that children are completely dependent on their parents. They are always in need of them, in their guidance, they find comfort and peace in their parents, see them as protection, support, strength, honor, and all. Our walking in God should be the same. To turn to God and become like little children – I understand this means to come to this state through faith in the truth.

Irene - Faith like a child is necessary for salvation
Greetings to all. I remembered one example, which you Zhenya used once. It then became very clear to me what is chidlike faith.

Example: It is a deep night. In the warm crib a child is sleeping. Outside it is cold, a blizzard. The mother comes, wakes up the child and says, we must go. And the child, without asking, fully trusting her, goes with her. The little child will not ask, are you sure where we will go it will be better there, he will not test her word, because he simply believes that his mother desires only good for him, although he may not understand why he needs to go somewhere at night and in the cold. When the time will come, he will understand why his mother told him to do so. But right now he simply trusts her and sincerely believes.

I understand that only faith saves us, faith like a child. God said – then this is the truth, whether we understand it or something is not yet fully open to us.

Dima - Why is it necessary for our faith to be like a child?
Why is it necessary for our faith to be like a child? Because children do not question what parents tell them, what they are taught. Adults are well taught to doubt in everything, and prior to believing, they ask questions, showing doubt. For example, you tell a child that there is a God – he simply believes this. Tell an adult that there is a God – he cannot simply believe this, he wants to test it and “perhaps” will believe one day. Adults “know” a lot, children do not know anything, they simply believe. That is why it is written that it is necessary to believe as a child, trust the Word, trust Christ in what He said, in other words simply believe as it is written in Scriptures, not adding or removing anything.

Barbara - The child doesn't complicate anything, simply accepts
I would like to add in regards to the faith of a child, that a child does not complicate anything, but simply accepts. “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpet beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:3).

A child understands everything as it is told by his parents. In other words, the child looks at the world through the spoken word(s) of his parents.
