It is interesting how in James chapter 2 it is written that faith, without works, is dead. This shows that it is possible to have faith, but if the faith doesn’t have works (if the faith doesn’t work!), this faith is in vain, it is dead! Such serious words! So what kind of works should my faith have? If you are a serious believer, it is important to ask yourself – does my faith work? Does my faith give me eternal life?
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (Matthew 7:21-23) KJV
How can it be, that many people will say such words to Christ in the last day, but He will respond: “I never knew you”?! Were these people lying to others? Lying to themselves? Deceived?
So many times I hear people say: “I felt God’s presence!”, “I felt the grace of rain upon me”, “I saw God’s hand”, or even “God was there to help me.” And of course, the person experienced such feelings, had a certain experience. But does it mean that they have the right faith? The faith which Christ brought us? The faith that brings salvation, eternal Life? Does it mean that I have the right faith?
In thinking about this topic, I realized the answer is: We cannot base our faith on our feelings, experience(s), or even knowledge! We have to base our faith SOLELY on one foundation, and that is God’s Word, His pure word, not distorted in any way! And only then it will be as it is written:
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a ROCK: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a ROCK” (Matthew 7:24,25) KJV
The teaching of Jesus Christ = the Bible = the True Word of God – is the ROCK, it is the anchor and foundation of my faith!
At this moment, all of us will probably say: “Yes, of course! I understand this also!” But if we look at ourselves sincerely, is this truly so in our lives? What word do I believe in? Is it according to God’s Word? What word am I driven by? What word do I feed myself with daily?
And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it” (Matthew 7:26,27) KJV
Note that these words are directed to those that hear the word of God, to people who are listening! So how can it be that I can hear the word, but not be a doer of the word, not let the word work in me? The answer is very simple: it’s because “well, I do not agree with it,” or, “but I do not experience it in this way”, or, “but I don’t see it like this”, or simply, “I do not think so!”
And this already is wrong faith, because God’s Truth, His Word is not based on what I see, how I understand it or feel about it. It just simply IS! And if I have anything of MINE as the foundation, or because my pastor said so, it will be exactly as it is written in Christ’s example, the house that was built upon the sand. That is why it is important to go against yourself, reject your own knowledge and understanding, your own feelings, your own vision, and seek to understand and accept ONLY God’s Truth! And after this, you will have a different vision, understanding, experience, which will be based on the Word of Truth, on the True faith.
So let’s not base our faith on our feelings, knowledge, or experiences. But instead, base our feelings, knowledge, and experiences on the True Faith! Simply believe the Word of God, the Bible, exactly as it is written, without any additions or alterations!
