God is so good. That is very true, but why is God so good? I hear that phrase so much, but sadly it’s often used for personal profit. “I got that thing I always wanted, God is so good.”, “I got a good grade on my test, God is so good.”, “My grandma got cured, God is so good!” Those are definitely good things, things to be thankful for. But that is the problem, those are good things, and it is easy to be thankful when everything goes good, when everything goes my way. But why is it so hard to say God is so good in times of trouble? Why do we fall, and feel like we’re losing hope? If you didn’t get that special gift, or if you didn’t pass the test, or if your grandmother ended up passing away when you hoped she’d live, would you still say God is so good? Even if you did, would it be sincere, from your heart? God is truly so good, beyond what words can express, but once again: why is God so good? God is good because His word is good, His word is Truth! By His word I was saved, He opened my ears to hear the word of Truth, and He opened my eyes to see clearly. He gave me salvation even though I didn’t deserve it, but He showed me love and mercy. He was knocking on my door even when I disobeyed, and He protected me when I thought I didn’t need Him. God is definitely so good. What person can say they never lied, they never snapped at someone out of anger, never judged, never turned against a friend, was never good only on the outside, never said one thing but meant another? Everyone makes mistakes in life, I thought I was the greatest thing to walk the earth, but I was no better than anyone else, I made plenty of mistakes. God is so good, because no matter if you did drugs, stole, or just over all made a lot of bad decisions, and no matter if you went to church every Sunday, volunteered at a shelter, build houses in Africa, or always did good things, without God – without God living in the heart – everyone is the same, everyone deserves death. “They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that do good, no, not one.” (Romans 3:12) My actions were good, but they didn’t come from my heart, I was obedient but inside I complained, I was friendly but inside I was proud, and because inside – my heart – was different than what was on the outside, I deserved death. But God is so good, because He forgave everything, the good and the bad, He put it all on the cross with His only begotten son and simply forgave everything! “But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.” (Philippians 3:7) God is so good because He gave people another chance, He gave me another chance, another clean, new heart. And He still knocks on everyone’s door, He still wants everyone to be saved, He still loves everyone. Everyone has a chance to live forever and be a citizen of another world, to obtain the Heavenly Kingdom. “For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.” (Hebrews 13:14) God is so good because He already did everything on His part, it is now up to the person to take it and believe in the Truth! So I no longer say God is so good just because I had a good day, because I passed a test, because I have a place to live and food to eat, but I also say God is so good, because He gave me life when I deserved death, because He chastises me and tests my faith, and because even in the hardest times His plan is still bigger than my own. And God is truly good because now I can say this with a sincere heart!
